Gersfeld (Rhön) is located in the southwest-oriented Fulda Valley within the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The town is surrounded in a semicircle by mountains assigned to the Hohe Rhön natural landscape and lies on the boundary between two natural regions. Its location thus combines a distinctive mountain setting with the protected landscape of the Rhön.
