Alpine Pasture World at the Old Bathhouse
The Alpine Pasture World offers an insight into life on the alpine pastures. Interactive stations invite visitors to discover the world of the alpine pastures and how it interacts with nature; exhibits and information panels also explore the biodiversity of the alpine pasture ecosystem. The exhibition includes a virtual hay-sled ride. The Alpine Pasture World is free to visit during the Tourist Information office’s opening hours. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.
Hiking and cycling
Hiking trails from Unterwössen lead, among other places, to Hochgern, which is 1,744 metres high. Close to the destination, you can climb Hochgern on foot or by mountain bike. Trail conditions and access may vary, so check them before setting out. The Achental cycle path follows the Tiroler Ache for a short stretch before turning into the centre of Unterwössen. This gives you two different planning options: a mountain destination with two ways to ascend, and a cycle route with a short riverside section and a turn into town.
Wössner See
You can walk around Wössner See year-round. The outdoor pool at Wössner See has a sunbathing lawn, a water slide and a children’s play area. Fishing permits are also issued at the lake. Check the current rules before planning a fishing trip, as permit arrangements may change.
Church, guided tours and gliding
The Catholic parish church of St. Martin was built between 1780 and 1783 and extended from 1961 to 1963. Achental Tourism regularly offers guided tours of churches and chapels in Unterwössen. Check current dates and details with the Tourist Information office. The German Alpine Gliding School in Unterwössen offers an introductory day for anyone interested. Check the provider’s current schedule and booking details.
Regional context: Traunstein
Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See are located in the district of Traunstein; the Chiemgau Alps there have more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks up to 2,000 metres high. In the town of Traunstein, the historic town walk passes the Cultural Forum at the Monastery Church and then continues to the Saltworks Chapel, the saltworks buildings and the Salinenpark, built in 2019. The surviving saltworks buildings and the Saltworks Chapel provide an insight into Traunstein’s significant salt-making history. The Saltworks Chapel is the largest chapel in Germany.
