Eisenberg: Castles, Church and Local Delights

Winter activities in the Ostallgäu

The Alpspitzbahn Nesselwang provides access to the ski run around the 1,575-metre-high Alpspitz. The ski area includes family-friendly slopes and a children's ski area. Two castle ruins with distinct histories

Eisenberg Castle Ruins are the remains of a medieval hilltop castle built around 1315 by the noble lords of Hohenegg. Opposite them, Hohenfreyberg Castle Ruins are the remains of a late medieval castle on a mountain summit. Construction began in 1418 under Friedrich von Freyberg zu Eisenberg; it is considered one of the last major castles built in the Middle Ages. Both ruins lie above Eisenberg and form a castle complex visible from far away.

A wooden viewing platform stands at Eisenberg Castle Ruins. From there, the view extends over Zell, a district of Eisenberg, the municipality of Pfronten and the mountain panorama beyond. The town hall or tourist information office in Eisenberg provides a specific starting point for the Eisenberg-Hohenfreyberg castle walk.

In Zell, a district of the municipality of Eisenberg, the Castle Museum displays archaeological finds from excavations at both ruins and presents them in an engaging way. The museum and the ruins thus offer different perspectives on the castles: the buildings themselves here, and the excavation finds there.

Church and regional products

The Maria-Hilf pilgrimage church offers a different architectural highlight. Dating from the 17th century, it is a Baroque church with elaborate Rococo altars and carvings. Those interested in different periods and forms of religious architecture will find another defining cultural attraction in Eisenberg here, alongside the medieval castles.

Regional products are also part of the town's character. Bergkäserei Weizern makes cheese and dairy specialities from fresh daily Allgäu whole milk supplied by hay-milk farmers from the region. Groups and coach parties can book guided tours in advance and sample cheese and dairy specialities.

Mariahilfer Sudhaus has its own brewery and serves regional cuisine as well as a range of beers brewed on site. Brewery tours last about an hour and are available by arrangement. The two food and drink experiences therefore differ: Bergkäserei focuses on dairy products and guided tours for groups booked in advance, while Sudhaus offers beer, cuisine and tours by prior arrangement.

In the surrounding area, the Beer and Cheese Walk links five stops between Sennerei Lehern near Hopferau and Mariahilfer Sudhaus in Speiden near Eisenberg. Information panels explain the art of brewing beer and making raw-milk cheese. The route adds an educational walking trail in the surrounding area to the local attractions, without being the same as the sights in the town centre.
