Building History and Local History

The lower gatehouse is a surviving part of Markt Erlbach’s former town fortifications and was built in the 17th century. The building is privately owned. The Brenck pulpit in St Kilian’s Church also tells of the town’s past connections: it previously stood in St John’s Church in Ansbach and was acquired by the people of Markt Erlbach in 1717. These two examples offer different ways to explore the town’s history—through its former fortifications and through a furnishing with an earlier location outside Markt Erlbach.

The Markt Erlbach Museum of History and Crafts focuses on dinosaur finds, the development of crafts and medical care, notable personalities, and the history of Markt Erlbach and its surroundings. Its themes range from early finds to everyday life and the development of the town. The museum was presented to the public on 28 July 2019, following almost ten years of renovation and reconstruction work. Advance registration is required to visit.

Events and Art in the Town

Two annual events bring different highlights to the calendar. The Erber Kerwa takes place in Markt Erlbach in mid-August and includes the tradition of driving the Kerwa bear. A Christmas market is held in Kirchgasse every year on the third Sunday of Advent. The exact dates vary from year to year. The almost 100-kilometre “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycle route crosses the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The district-wide cycling network also offers themed routes for different abilities, from leisurely to sporty cycling. The Aischgründer Karpfenschmeckerwochen take place each year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district; check which establishments are taking part before you travel. In Neustadt an der Aisch, Aischgründer mirror carp is one of the local specialities and is served from September to April, including crispy fried or cooked in a seasoned broth.
