Votive Chapel and memorial sites
The Votive Chapel in Berg Palace Park was built in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its history dates back to 1896: in June, on the tenth anniversary of King Ludwig II’s death, Prince Regent Luitpold laid its foundation stone. This places a visit to the chapel in the historical context of commemorating the king.
A solemn memorial mass for King Ludwig II is held at the chapel every year around 13 June. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the event details before your visit. Below the Votive Chapel, a simple wooden cross in the shallow waters of Lake Starnberg marks the spot where Ludwig II was found lifeless on 13 June 1886. He had gone for a walk there with Professor von Gudden shortly beforehand. The chapel and the cross thus commemorate different aspects of the same historic site.
Hiking route and audio walk
The King Ludwig Trail begins at the Votive Chapel. Its route runs via Starnberg through the Maisinger Gorge to Maising. This hiking route offers a different way to explore the surrounding area than visiting the memorial sites. Further afield in the region, the trail is marked on maps and signs with a blue “K” topped by a crown on a white background.
If you prefer to explore individual stops, you can include the King Ludwig II audio walk in your plans. It comprises seven stops in total, in Starnberg, Kempfenhausen, Berg and Leoni. The stops have no set order, are free of charge and can be accessed independently of one another. The walk is suitable for all ages.
Culture in the municipality
The Berger cultural walk explains places of cultural and historical interest in the municipality of Berg on information boards. The Bismarck Tower also stands near Assenhausen. Its planning and construction began during Bismarck’s lifetime; it is the only Bismarck monument in Upper Bavaria with this distinction. Both add further aspects of cultural history to the sites associated with King Ludwig II.
