Castles and Monastic History
The Hohenzollerns are documented as owners of Cadolzburg Castle from the mid-13th century. The castle has preserved structural elements dating from around 1250 and is home to the interactive castle experience museum “HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg.” A family overview tour is titled “HerrschaftsZeiten! So lebten die Hohenzollern auf der Cadolzburg.” It lasts 75 minutes and takes place on the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. Check the date again before your trip; you should also check the operator’s current visitor arrangements.
In Langenzenn, the former monastery complex of the Augustinian Canons dates to 1409. Its particularly well-preserved cloister is a distinctive feature of the complex. The complex has three wings and lies north of the town church, Trinitatiskirche. This gives Langenzenn a different historical focus from Cadolzburg Castle: here, the monastery architecture and cloister take center stage, while there, it is the castle complex and interactive museum.
Archaeology and Local History
In Roßtal, the Archaeological Trail passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large-format information panels explain the history of “urbs horsadal,” the name for Roßtal when it was first mentioned in a document in 954. The trail thus connects archaeological traces with local history. If you’re more interested in collections, Roßtal’s Museumshof is a carefully restored historic estate with an archaeological collection and a local history collection.
Trails for Different Day Plans
The Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail is a day hike in the district of Fürth. It runs from Roßtal to Langenzenn along field and forest paths, with cultural and historical stops in Roßtal, Cadolzburg and Langenzenn. It has been awarded the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal as a cultural heritage trail. Describing it as a day hike distinguishes it from a shorter themed route, without specifying an exact trail length.
The Ammerndorf Art and Nature Trail follows a 2.5-kilometer route along the Bibert Valley Cycle Path and features numerous artworks and sculptures. The educational trail starts at the threshing machine house. Its four themed routes pass through the surrounding countryside, the town and along the cycle path; information panels explain ecological points of interest. This trail brings together artworks and information about nature in a variety of settings.
The Allianz Loop Trail covers a considerably larger area: it is about 50 kilometers long and designed for hikers and cyclists. The route passes through Ammerndorf, Cadolzburg, Großhabersdorf, Oberasbach, Roßtal, Stein and Zirndorf in the southern part of the district of Fürth. The different descriptions help with orientation: a 2.5-kilometer route for the Art and Nature Trail, a day hike for the Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail, and an approximately 50-kilometer loop for the Allianz Loop Trail. The trails therefore differ both in format and in the stated distance.
Museums, Views and a Rainy-Day Option
In Zirndorf, the tower of the Alte Veste, rebuilt in 1980, has an observation platform with views over Zirndorf, Nuremberg, Fürth and the surrounding area. The Museum Zirndorf is listed as open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; check these hours before your visit. At the Graf von Faber-Castell’sches Schloss, visitors can experience 265 years of Faber-Castell’s company and family history. Online booking is required for a visit.
The PLAYMOBIL-FunPark in Zirndorf offers 90,000 square meters of opportunities for climbing, balancing and playing. In bad weather, the FunPark’s 5,000-square-meter, glass-enclosed HOB-Center features life-size PLAYMOBIL sets and extensive play areas. There is also a show stage, themed dining and a coffee bar.
