Hiking trails between forest and open countryside
Hiking Trail No. 18 runs through mixed forests and, in places, open countryside. Along the way, there are views of the Lallinger Winkel, Hausstein and the Danube Plain. No. 17, by contrast, crosses the open countryside at the foot of the Hausstein ridge and offers views of the Lallinger Winkel, Brotjacklriegel and the Danube Plain. The two trails therefore share some viewpoints; the main difference described is the scenery along the way: mixed forest and open sections on No. 18, and open countryside at Hausstein on No. 17.
There is also a specifically designated route for a winter outing: in winter, the destination hiking trail No. 7 between Nadling and the Asklepios Clinic is prepared as a winter hiking trail. Since this preparation is seasonal, check local notices before setting out. Another hiking option is an alternative Goldsteig route. It leads from Rusel through the Hausstein high forest, past the Asklepios Clinic to Schaufling, then via Wulreiching, Ragin, Ensbach, Böhaming and Ginn to its junction with the main route.
Near Schaufling, the GEHsundheitsweg begins at the Ruselabsatz car park on state road ST 2135. Information about getting there by public transport is available on the municipality’s website. In the associated municipality, the two-kilometer Kräuterlehrpfad also passes through open countryside and mixed forest by the “Kräutersegen” herb garden. The trail’s length and changing scenery give you concrete points of comparison with hiking trails No. 17 and No. 18.
Natural monuments and historic memorial sites
In the center of Schaufling, directly in front of the parish church, stands the ancient “Dorflinde” (village lime tree). Considered a natural attraction and natural monument, it is a distinctive landmark in Schaufling’s local landscape. Königstein adds a historic memorial site to this sense of place: below the summit of Hausstein is a small plateau with a granite column just under two meters high. Its inscriptions recall the presence of King Max II and Marie on July 11, 1849, as well as the presence of a Bavarian prince on June 10, 1901.
The municipality’s hamlets each have their own character. Ensbach has a distinctive ensemble of farmhouses and won the silver medal as runner-up in the 2000 district-level round of the “Our Village Should Become More Beautiful – Our Village Has a Future” competition. Schützing took first place in the Bavarian state-level round of the same competition and second place in the national round. Sicking is known for its nature-oriented local landscape and idyllic valley setting; in 2006, the hamlet was recognized for its achievements in garden and landscape culture in creating a livable home. These examples therefore differ both in their local character and in the type of recognition they received.
Deggendorf as the wider landscape setting
The wider travel destination of Deggendorf encompasses a broad sweep of landscapes in the Deggendorfer Land: from the heights of the Bavarian Forest, across the Danube landscape with the Isar’s confluence, to the Gäuboden. Elevations there range from 200 to 1,150 meters above sea level. This regional context complements Schaufling’s specific trails and local landscapes without conflating them with features of the wider region.
Castle ruins also offer their own viewpoints in the Deggendorf travel destination. From the ruins of Natternberg Castle, the view stretches across the Gäuboden and into the Bavarian Forest; the ruins can be reached on footpaths from three sides. The ruins of Winzer Castle offer a magnificent view of the Danube Valley. The wider Deggendorf travel destination thus offers distinctive landscape views alongside Schaufling’s hiking and cultural features.
