The Ampertal and its landscape

In the Ampertal, floodplain forests, reed beds and wet meadows line the river, alongside numerous oxbow lakes. The river, floodplains, reed beds and former river channels form the main landscape features of Hebertshausen. Those interested in nature and waterways will find a different focus here than at the churches and memorial sites in the municipality.

Art, churches and architectural history

The Alte Georgskirche combines a completed restoration project with an artistic interior design: it was extensively restored and redesigned from 2014 to 2020. Since 2020, a luminous composition of colors by German-American artist Jerry Zeniuk has shaped its interior. The church can be reached by car or via the Hebertshausen S-Bahn station; access is barrier-free.

The history of the area also includes a castle built above the Ampertal in the 12th century, with a Romanesque chapel as part of the complex. At the municipal level, Schloss Deutenhofen, built by the Barons von Mandl, and the castle in Oberweilbach are part of the historical context. In Oberweilbach, the castle includes a two-story main building with a hipped roof, built in 1692. The late Gothic St. Martin’s Chapel is integrated into the building and was renovated in 1845.

At the municipal level, the Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Oberweilbach is part of the historical context; it was built by Carl Lärlinger in 1711. The Catholic parish church of St. Peter on Kirchenstraße is also part of the municipality’s historical context. It dates back to the end of the 15th century and has an older core; it was extended in 1839. These dates offer different historical reference points for exploring the municipality’s architecture.

Memorial site and exhibition

The former SS shooting range in Hebertshausen was transformed into a memorial with an outdoor exhibition in 2014. The trilingual open-air exhibition features more than 100 photographs, documents, drawings and plans. Information panels along a circular route help visitors understand the events that took place on the site. Cycling, S-Bahn and shopping

The “Fish, Beer and Moorland” circular route is about 21 kilometers long and starts and ends in Hebertshausen. The route description mentions Hebertshausen S-Bahn station and the Ammer-Amper Cycle Path as possible ways to get there. Its approximate length helps you plan the route as a standalone activity; check current route conditions in advance. Hebertshausen also has an S-Bahn station on line S2. The permanent collection of the Dachau Gemäldegalerie includes landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
