Historic Places in Pegnitz
The Historic Town Hall was built around 1347 and stands in the middle of the city’s long, wide street market. St. Bartholomew’s Church can also be dated: it is the third church building on this site; the present church was consecrated in 1900. St. Mary’s Church was built in 1927 for a diaspora community that had grown to around 600 Catholics. Around 1939, it acquired its present appearance with the Baroque furnishings from Dornbach Church.
The history of the Zaußen Mill goes back further: Hans Zauß built it around 1450. After lying in ruins for decades, it was rebuilt by Hans Dennerlein in 1710. Altenstädter Castle was extensively renovated and converted; it is used for city concerts and events. At the crash site on Fischelhöhe, a rock monument erected in 1973 commemorates soldiers who died in accidents. A plaque records their names.
Karst Landscape and Views
Behind the former Zaußen Mill, the Pegnitz rises from a typical karst spring. Another geological point of interest is the Wasserberg Karstwunder: there, the Mühlbach loses some of its water on the northern slope through limestone fissures and a ponor cave. These two places show different forms of karst, from a spring to the underground drainage of water.
At 544 metres high, Schloßberg is a landmark of Pegnitz. The tower can be reached via 97 steps and offers panoramic views over Pegnitz and the surrounding area. Kleiner Kulm is 626 metres high and is one of the highest elevations in Franconian Switzerland. From there, the view extends over the Franconian Forest, the Fichtel Mountains and Franconian Switzerland. These offer different perspectives for orientation: from Schloßberg, a view over Pegnitz and its surroundings; from Kleiner Kulm, a view over three named landscape regions.
Routes and Practical Information
The town walk starts and ends at the Old Town Hall at Hauptstraße 45. Two distances are given: approximately 3.5 or 5.7 kilometres. The Leo-Jobst Trail starts and ends at the Pegnitz spring behind the Zaußen Mill, Bayreuther Straße 3 / Forchheim.
One specific restriction is important for the WaldTIER nature trail: it is not suitable for strollers. Its starting point is in the Schloßberg area. Since June 2021, Pegnitz has also been connected to the regional leisure bus route, the Schlösserlinie. The stated route runs between Bayreuth, Pegnitz, Pottenstein, Gößweinstein, Waischenfeld, Hollfeld and Kulmbach. Check the current timetable when planning a specific journey.

In the broader Bayreuth destination, the Ochsenkopf offers winter activities of its own: there is a 1,900-metre-long south-facing piste and four groomed Alpine ski runs. Some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. The Ochsenkopf also offers well-marked hiking trails, the all-weather Alpine Coaster toboggan run, a mountain cart track, the Nord and Süd gondola lifts, and downhill and single-track trails.
