Local history, museums, routes and a seasonal pretzel tradition give you several reasons to visit Weidenberg.

Museums and early local history

The Weidenberg Museum Trail connects the town’s museums, collections and art venues. The museums along the trail offer demonstrations and hands-on activities. You can complement your museum visit with these practical activities; if a particular demonstration is a key part of your plans, check the specific dates in advance. The trail brings together various cultural sites in the town under a shared theme.

Historical tours of the Obermarkt and tours with the night watchman offer a different perspective on local history. They include visits to some of the historic rock cellars that Weidenberg residents carved into the sandstone in the early Middle Ages. These tours therefore take in tangible underground traces of the past, while the Museum Trail connects museums, collections and art venues. These experiences offer different ways to explore the town’s history during your stay.

The Schlosshügel castle site is also part of the market town’s early history: the former castle complex, or ring fort, lies above Sophienthal, a district of the market town of Weidenberg. The castle site and the rock cellars represent different historic structures: a castle complex on the one hand, and cellars carved into sandstone on the other.

Routes in town and around the region

The Kulm Loop is 9.6 kilometres long, starts at Weidenberg station and follows FGV Circular Trail No. 1 for most of its route. Its length, starting point and route make this circular trail easy to picture. The Haidenaab Cycle Route follows a different course: from Bayreuth, it runs largely free of motor traffic through the scenic Steinach Valley to Weidenberg. This means you can choose between a circular route with a stated distance that starts at the station and a cycle route connecting Bayreuth and Weidenberg. Historic burgher houses on the Obermarkt are among Weidenberg’s sights along the Haidenaab Cycle Route.

Brezel Weeks and seasonal planning

The Weidenberg Brezel Weeks carry on a pretzel tradition documented as far back as the Middle Ages. From Epiphany to Ash Wednesday, local inns serve aniseed pretzels with hearty dishes and beer. If you’d like to make this tradition the reason for a trip, plan your visit for this period. For a specific travel year, check the latest dates.

Bayreuth as a broader destination

As part of the wider Bayreuth destination, you can explore beyond Weidenberg and discover the Bayreuth district. It has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 km of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycle paths. A wide range of long-distance and themed cycle routes crosses the district, passing through different natural landscapes and taking in their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycle routes make the network denser and allow for shorter, more local route planning.

The landscapes also vary across the district: the Fichtelgebirge defines its northern part, with dark forests and granite boulder fields; the Franconian Switzerland defines the western and southern parts, with varied, gentle scenery.
