Landscape and orientation

At 886 metres, Kapf is the highest point in Leutkirch. The hilly surroundings shape the landscape around the town; forests and ponds are part of it, as are the Eschach and the Adelegg, which a hiking trail runs through.

The town pond is an 18-hectare bathing lake. If you are planning a stay by the water, bear in mind that swimming conditions can vary, and check the current conditions before your visit.

Hiking trails and points of interest

Circular Hiking Trail 1 passes the Repsweiher pond and then continues into the Unterer Stadtwald forest. At the Siebenbrünnen springs, hikers can take a break and refresh themselves with cool spring water; water availability can vary. The stops mentioned offer different points along the route: a pond, a forest and a place to rest by the spring.

Circular Hiking Trail 2 leads from the old town towards the Waldkapelle chapel and reaches the Weiherweg on the outskirts of Leutkirch. On the return leg, it passes the Repsweiher pond. A detour takes you to Balterazhofer Höhe, which offers views of the Alpine panorama.

The Glasius Trail starts in Schmidsfelden and runs for just over four kilometres along the Eschach through the Adelegg. Its 16 interactive learning and play stations invite children and adults to discover the history of glassmaking in the Adelegg. If you would rather explore cultural history in one place, you can also find it in Schmidsfelden: the experience trail has three stations for playing, picnicking and enjoying the views. The “View towards Gallus Chapel” station includes a viewing frame pointing towards the chapel, a bicycle parking area, a slackline, a lounging bench and a relaxation lounger. The facilities at individual stations may change.

The history of glassmaking and town life

In the former glassmakers’ village of Schmidsfelden, a museum presents stages in the area’s history of glassmaking. The Glass Museum provides information about the history of the “glass barons” and ordinary workers. There, you can discover different sides of regional glassmaking. In the village, glassmaker Stefan Michaelis gives glassmaking demonstrations. Since the current demonstration times need to be checked separately, it is advisable to check the schedule before your visit.

The market square is also part of the town’s cultural life: a band concert is held there every week. Check the current dates in advance if you would like to plan your visit around one.

Culture in the wider destination of Ravensburg

In the wider destination of Ravensburg, the Humpis Quarter Museum offers another focus on cultural history. It opened in July 2009; its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. The Allgäu-Oberschwaben Farmhouse Museum in Wolfegg illustrates how people in the region used to work, live and make their homes. These museums are separate attractions in the destination of Ravensburg and are not features of Leutkirch.

Weighing up interests for your stay

When planning your stay, you can sort the options described according to your interests: the hiking trails lead past ponds, through forests or to a viewpoint; in Schmidsfelden, the focus is on the history of glass and demonstrations; and the town pond is a bathing lake. If you are looking for accommodation, this selection can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. For time-specific activities such as demonstrations and band concerts, check the current dates.
