Chapel, mill and pilgrimage tradition

The Holy Cross Chapel was first mentioned in 1468 and is the landmark of Amtzell. The nearby Reibeisen Mill, dating from 1711, offers a different glimpse into the past. Its restored milling equipment is on display, including original millstones, tanning and middlings-cleaning machines, and sieving equipment. The mill is powered by an overshot waterwheel, supplied with water through a channel from the Rohnebach stream. This allows visitors not only to see the machinery but also to understand how water made the mill’s work possible.

A visit to the mill also includes the house, where furniture and household items remain in their original places. The kitchen, the mill hand’s room, and the living and bedrooms, with a filled trousseau cupboard, convey what daily life used to be like. The kitchen of the last owner, Rosa Kübler, is part of this glimpse into the past. Visits to the house must be arranged in advance.

The hamlet of Pfärrich is nearby, on a wooded ridge between Wangen and Amtzell. Its Church of the Birth of Mary is visible from far away. Visitors can light a candle there or write their prayers and thanks in a prayer book. For centuries, pilgrims have travelled to Pfärrich on the Friday before Palm Sunday, known as Seven Sorrows Friday. This tradition is a special point of interest for anyone wishing to explore religious sites as well as architectural and technological history.

Cultural destinations in the wider Ravensburg travel region

In the wider Ravensburg travel region, the Humpis Quarter Museum offers another perspective on the history of domestic life. It opened in July 2009, and its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. The Wolfegg Allgäu-Oberschwaben Farmhouse Museum also focuses on regional history. It preserves 28 historic buildings, some of them several centuries old. The museum illustrates how people in the region once worked, lived and went about their daily lives. Both destinations explore the past, but with different emphases: the Humpis Quarter focuses on a late-medieval residential quarter, while Wolfegg focuses on historic buildings and life in the region.

Achberg Castle is the district of Ravensburg’s cultural centre. Set high above the Argental valley, it showcases Baroque architecture. It is open to all visitors and offers educational activities for children. The circular hiking trails starting from the castle are also a highlight of a visit: they lead through gently rolling meadows on the high riverbank and down steep slopes with ravines along the side of the Argental valley.
