Windelsbach combines a historic town center with surroundings shaped by gently wooded hills, green meadows and small streams. The main village lies between two lakes, and hiking trails lead through the countryside for relaxing excursions. When planning your stay, it is also worth looking at the municipality as a whole: some destinations are in other districts, not in Windelsbach’s town center.
Local History and St. Martin’s Church
The historic town center dates back to the 8th century. At the time, the settlement was called Binoldsbach and was a junction for two long-distance trade routes. The town center includes, among other things, the Margrave’s Castle. Windelsbach’s St. Martin’s Church houses a precious altar from the school of Nuremberg artist Michael Wohlgemuth. Visitors are welcome at services and in the church. If you plan to visit outside of a service, please check current opening hours in advance.
Traditional crafts are also part of what the area has to offer: Martin Kost is considered one of the last comb-makers in Germany. Visits, guided tours and group tours are possible; advance registration is required. Windelsbach’s festivals include the church fair, Advent market and the rural youth festival. Check the dates of individual events before your trip.
Countryside and Trails in the Municipality
The municipality of Windelsbach is in Frankenhöhe Nature Park. The area offers hiking and cycling tours as well as walking paths. The European Watershed Trail passes through the municipal area. The municipality’s barefoot and nature experience trail is 1.5 kilometers long. These activities offer different reasons to spend time outdoors, but not all of them are located in the main village.
The upper reaches of the Altmühl also run through the municipal area, with a largely unmodified stream, alder groves and tall-herb vegetation. The flat floodplain is characterized by grassland and, in places, wet meadows. The Nordenberg natural swimming area features a “Water Experience” section; check whether it is available before your trip.
Destinations in the Districts
Nordenberg and Preuntsfelden are other districts in the municipality. Nordenberg Castle was the seat of the imperial kitchen masters from the mid-12th century until 1383. It was destroyed in 1408; today, ruins and imposing ramparts are all that remain of the castle. In Preuntsfelden, St. Nicholas Church stands on a hill. A predecessor chapel in what was then called “Brungartsfelden” was first mentioned around 1330.
Events and activities are also spread across the municipal area: Preuntsfelden hosts a vintage tractor rally every two years; check the specific dates in advance. Horse riding with Knabstrupper horses and vaulting are also offered there. Please arrange your visit in advance. This makes it possible to consider the different local and landscape attractions separately when planning your trip.
More Destinations in the Wider Ansbach Travel Region
The wider Ansbach travel region also includes independent cultural attractions in other places. In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the 2.2-kilometer, fully accessible Literaturweg Franken (Franconian Literature Trail) loops around the town fortifications. Its 15 panels feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. The “wiegen & messen” (Weighing & Measuring) Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits, including historic scales and their weights, measuring rods, folding rulers and vessels used to measure grain. These attractions add literary and everyday history to the picture of Ansbach, but they are not part of Windelsbach’s town center.
