The European Watershed Trail runs directly through Neusitz and covers 98 kilometres from Ansbach to Schnelldorf. The trail bears the German Hiking Association’s “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” seal. Above Neusitz, in the area of Schlossberg, it climbs 100 metres in elevation. Beech, oak and mixed forests accompany the trail along the edge of the Frankenhöhe, near the watershed and to the south.
A circular route with a different distance is the 22.7-kilometre W13 “Kirnberger Weg”. It descends across the Frankenhöhe to Neusitz and continues to the starting point; the route is estimated to take 6.5 hours. Compared with the 98-kilometre European Watershed Trail, W13 offers a clearly defined circular route with its own estimated time. This makes it possible to distinguish between the two hiking trails by distance and planned time.
Cycling routes through Neusitz and the surrounding area
The Franconian Water Cycle Route passes through Neusitz, by several ponds and then into the forest. This changing landscape gives the route a different focus from the hiking trails. Holy Cross Church: Altar and tradition
The altar of the Holy Cross Church in Neusitz features a Crucifixion group from the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider. The history of the church building also offers a distinct way to learn about the town: the church was probably originally associated with a castle and later served as the convent church of a Dominican nunnery. According to tradition, it is considered older than all the churches in Rothenburg.
