Winter Trails and Tours
The loop trail Boucle des Avenières starts at the Sous La Bèque parking lot next to an information board about hiking. This Avenières orientation board offers panoramic views of Mont Blanc, Beaufortain, and the Aravis Massif.
The E-bike route Tour du Val d’Arly, also signposted as an FFC route, passes through the surrounding area: it runs from the center of Flumet toward Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle, then continues to the higher hamlet of Chaucisse and the Route de Montagnes.
Nature
The municipality of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle includes part of the 3,747-hectare Aravis Nature Reserve. The nature reserve is considered a refuge for chamois, ibex, marmots, mouflons, roe deer, foxes, badgers, wild boar, black grouse, bearded vultures, and golden eagles.
The Nanpareux/Merdassier reserve extends across Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle and Ugine and is designated as an integral nature reserve.
Culture and History
The church of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle has eight bells; two of them were cast on site in 2013. Its furnishings include a Clergeau organ, which was brought to the church in 1866 and restored and motorized by Merklin in 1944.
The Eglise de Chaucisse was built in 1818 as a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis de Sales and elevated to a parish church in 1828. Its wooden-shingle roof was recently restored, and the walls are painted. Inside, there are furnishings and fittings featuring artistic characteristics of the Baroque period. The interior is closed except in summer, during the daily Mass.
Until around the middle of the 19th century, lace was made at home in Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle from flax and hemp grown locally. Merchants from Faucigny subsequently sold this lace on.
Alpine Pastures and Regional Products
The Alpage Les Mouilles can be reached by off-road vehicle or on foot via the Route des Montagnes. Goat Tommes, Séracs, Faisselles, Petits frais, and pure goat cheese are produced and sold there.
