Le Bourget-Du-Lac: Hotels and accommodations

Le Bourget-du-Lac combines significant historic sites with the protected southern shore of Lac du Bourget and a diverse range of activities on the water. Château Thomas II was built on land acquired in 1248 by Thomas II of Savoy and is a unique structure throughout the region, as well as an essential reference point for understanding medieval civil and military architecture. Until the 15th century, it was a country residence of the Counts of Savoy on the shore of Lac du Bourget; it later became a romantic ruin. Since 2012, its towers have housed a museum facility presenting the lake’s fauna and flora as well as the protection of natural areas.

Culture and history

Le Prieuré was built around 1030 for Cluniac monks and has a cloister with Gothic vaults. Classified as a historic monument, it belongs to the network of Cluniac sites and is part of the Council of Europe’s major cultural route.

The gardens of Le Prieuré were awarded the “Jardin Remarquable” designation in September 2006. They are considered particularly significant from a historical and botanical perspective, are free to access and open year-round.

The Église Saint-Laurent features a polychrome stone rood screen attributed to the Burgundian school. The church was classified as a historic monument in 1900.

Nature

The protected southern shore of Lac du Bourget is a diverse wetland habitat preserved to protect fauna and flora and for the benefit of residents and visitors. The marshes on the southern shore combine aquatic reed beds with forests, wet meadows, ponds and a lake, thereby forming habitats that attract numerous species.

A program to reintroduce the European pond turtle, a protected freshwater turtle, is underway in the protected area. The Observatoire des Aigrettes can be reached via a discovery trail along the grounds surrounding the château and is open to the public as part of the “Sorties Nature” program.

Water and trails

Seven major hiking trails start from Le Bourget-du-Lac. Club Nautique Chambéry–Le Bourget-du-Lac offers rowing for beginners through experienced competitors, as well as courses for children and adults, recreational rowing and outings.

The Plage municipale has a water play area supplied with lake water, a large pier with a diving board leading to the swimming area and a beach volleyball court. It can be reached from Chambéry and Aix-les-Bains by road and cycle path and is located near a bus stop for line 1 and the Synchro or Chrono A lines.

Chambéry Le Bourget Canoë Kayak offers canoeing and kayaking on the lake and river, guided outings, trips on calm and moving water, as well as canoe rental. At Lac du Bourget, visitors can swim, sail, row, wakeboard, go boating, use pedal boats and fish.

The Yacht Club du Bourget-du-Lac offers water sports, courses and private lessons for children, teenagers and adults, as well as the rental of catamarans, dinghies, windsurf boards, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. Handivoile activities are also available for everyone.
