Saint-Bon-Tarentaise: Hotels and Accommodation

Saint-Bon is considered the original village of Courchevel. This is where the history of the winter sports resort began with the construction of its first hotel in 1908. Courchevel 1850, in the municipality of Saint-Bon, was one of the first winter sports areas to be developed on previously undeveloped land in the immediate post-war period. The first buildings in Courchevel 1850 were constructed from 1946 onwards according to a master plan by urban planner Laurent Chappis.

History

The history of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise includes the Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Courchevel 1850. It is located in Saint-Bon-Tarentaise and has been listed as a historic monument since 17 January 2005. In Le Freney stands the Chapelle Sainte-Anne, dating from 1680. Saint-Bon Town Hall dates from 1870 and is considered a unique example of neo-classical Sardinian civil architecture in the Tarentaise. The Chapelle Saint-Bernard-des-Alpes in La Jairaz dates from before 1613.

Architectural Heritage

The Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Le Praz dates from the 15th century and was enlarged in 1697. The Church of Saint Bon was extended in the 17th century following the Romanesque floor plan of an earlier building. This church contains the Rosary altar created by Jean-Marie Molino in 1689. In the form of a rosebush, it depicts the fifteen Mysteries as well as a gilded wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. The altarpiece of the Poor Souls in Purgatory also stands in the left aisle.

Paths and Elevation

Saint-Bon lies at an elevation of approximately 1,100 to 1,150 metres and has preserved the character of a mountain village with narrow lanes and old houses. The Chemin du Paradis leads to Saint-Bon-le-Haut, while the Chemin des Travers runs through the hamlets of Saint-Bon. The “Tour de la vallée” mountain bike circuit enters the village at the entrance to Saint-Bon.

Free, regular shuttle buses connect Saint-Bon with the other villages of Courchevel.

Local Traditions

Every autumn, the “L’Alambic Saint-Bonnais” association maintains the tradition of distilling. The former bread oven in Saint-Bon-Le-Haut now houses the municipal still. A traditional Savoyard soup continues to be prepared at the Madelon celebration at the end of July.
