Culture and History

The Chapelle Saint-Jean is the last remaining architectural testament to the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem in the Hautes-Alpes. Underground, the Mine d'argent du Fournel offers a one-hour guided tour through 600 meters of medieval tunnels and tunnels dating from the 19th century.

The Tour des Hermes was built in 1922 by Gilbert Planche’s company, which operated the aluminum plant in L’Argentière-la-Bessée. The tower rang to show the factory workers the time and help them avoid arriving late.

The Plan d'eau de l'Argentière-la-Bessée is used for recreation by the water, fishing, and training in whitewater sports such as canoeing and kayaking. The Stade d'eau vive de l'Argentière-La-Bessée (III) is located at the beginning of a 35 km navigable section of the Durance that leads to Embrun.

Activities

The Via Ferrata de l’Horloge begins near the local climbing routes and returns via a descent secured with steel cables or by a path to the parking lot. The Les Collets climbing crag is a beginner climbing area with nearly thirty routes, most of which are graded 4 and 5.

Nature

Around L’Argentière-la-Bessée, the Réserve des chardons bleus can be reached via the GR 54. There, the nationally protected and Natura 2000-designated alpine sea holly Eryngium alpinum covers 40 hectares in the upper Fournel Valley. The Réserve des chardons bleus also has an educational trail with information panels about high-mountain habitats and the adaptations of alpine plants.
