Trails and winter
Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle has 100 km of signposted hiking trails and 103 km of approved mountain bike routes. The signposted FFC mountain bike circuit no. 13, “La Grande Goutte,” is 20 km long, has an elevation gain of 430 metres, and is rated red for difficulty.
The “Les 2 chapelles” hike is 12 km long, has an elevation gain of 510 metres, and takes approximately four hours on foot. It begins at a car park below the Chapelle des Charbonniers and leads along a forest track to the Chapelle Botiotte.
The family hike “Balade famille au Ballon d’Alsace” is an easy, 6 km route with an elevation gain of 140 metres and takes approximately two hours. It passes through the protected Réserve Naturelle des Ballons Comtois nature reserve; dogs, including those on a leash, are prohibited there.
The Sentier découverte du Ballon d’Alsace takes approximately one hour and includes ten information panels as well as an orientation panel.
Geographical location
The station at Ballon d’Alsace can be reached via the village of Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle between Le Thillot and Bussang on the RN66. At 1,247 m, Ballon d’Alsace is the highest point in the southern Vosges and is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.
Some cattle still graze on the grasslands of Rouge Gazon in summer. The Chaume des Neufs Bois at Rouge Gazon is a man-made pasture that was formerly used by the Marcaires as summer grazing land.
Culture
The Chapelle des Charbonniers was built in 1860 on the TĂŞtote as a wooden chapel, to provide the hamlet, which was far from the church of Saint-Maurice, with a place of prayer. The Chapelle Botiotte was built in 1857 and expanded to its present size in 1873.
Notre-Dame du Ballon at Ballon d’Alsace was built in 1862. The Monument des Démineurs at Ballon d’Alsace was inaugurated on 7 July 1952.
The Chapelle Botiotte can be visited individually free of charge year-round via signposted paths. It is also a destination for walks in the forest near the remains of historic mines.
Le pont Montbel is a structure located at an altitude of 903 m in the forest and can only be reached on foot via several circuits.
Further activities
La Jumenterie is an equestrian centre on the Vosges side of Ballon d’Alsace. La Jumenterie offers riding lessons, riding courses, and horseback excursions. The horseback excursions may include stages at Ferme-Auberges, where specialities from Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle are served.
