Beech trees and granite shape the landscape of La Chabanne. For hiking, there is the 9 km Les Grands Bois circular trail, which takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, as well as the also 9 km La Grande Serve circular trail, which takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The GR3 long-distance hiking trail passes through La Chabanne.
The educational trail along the Le Sapey stream leads through deciduous and coniferous forest and offers panoramic views over the Besbre Valley. The municipality also provides two electric bicycles exclusively by prior reservation.
Culture
Construction of the Sainte-Marie Church began in 1836; it was extended from 1852 to 1858. During its restoration from 1933 to 1935, the painter Despalles from Cusset was commissioned to create devotional paintings. Sainte-Marie Church is known for its Art Deco interior.
La Chabanne’s unusual cultural heritage includes mills and a former lead-silver mine. Among the remains still visible near La Presle are pits where animal hides were once soaked for tanning. The water of the stream near La Presle enabled the establishment of a highly active knitting industry. In connection with La Presle, the textile industry was active in the 17th and 18th centuries; combing, spinning, and weaving were carried out by hand.
Visitor Information
The Les Herbes Folles ecological project offers tours of the site and organizes community work sessions. The former private school in La Chabanne was converted into municipal accommodation.
