Staré Sedliště combines historic buildings, evidence of an eventful local history, and a landscape shaped by numerous ponds. The château grounds, church precinct, and wetlands represent different facets of the town.
History
The late Baroque Staré Sedliště Château was built in 1792 by the glassmaker František Koler. The château grounds are an archaeological find site with documented or well-founded suspected archaeological finds. The medieval fortress on the château grounds was burned down during the Thirty Years’ War.
During the socialist era, Staré Sedliště lost most of its historic buildings; extensive demolitions caused lasting damage to the historic appearance of the town. The local history also includes the production of juniper syrup and the manorial brewery: juniper syrup was once produced here and sold throughout Bohemia as well as in Saxony and Bavaria, while the beginnings of the manorial brewery date back to around 1548.
Buildings
The local rectory is a restored Baroque building from the 18th century and a cultural monument. It can be used for family celebrations and smaller social events.
The Church of St Procopius and St Ulrich in Staré Sedliště has a Gothic core but was fundamentally rebuilt in the Baroque period. It is a valuable example of high-quality Baroque sacred architecture and has been preserved without significant later alterations. A historic enclosing wall surrounds the church and cemetery grounds; it was built gradually during different periods.
Staré Sedliště is also home to a preserved and valuable statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the early 18th century. The remains of a vaulted Baroque bridge have also been preserved.
Nature
The Tisovské rybnÃky Nature Reserve protects a system of pond and adjoining wetland ecosystems. It is one of the most important ornithological areas in the Plzeňský kraj and provides a breeding habitat for cranes.
The MÄ›lký rybnÃk Nature Reserve lies about 1 kilometre east of the Staré SedliÅ¡tÄ› railway station, covers 27.9 hectares, and features reed beds as well as an important bird breeding site. The ÄŒeský les Nature Park is also listed as a protected area for Staré SedliÅ¡tÄ›.
Marked routes
A marked, 21-kilometre hiking route starting from Staré Sedliště is described as moderately difficult and not a circular route. It begins at the Staré Sedliště railway stop and follows the green hiking trail sign towards Nové Sedliště.
For cyclists, Cycle Route 2167 connects Staré Sedliště and Planá over a distance of 21 kilometres.
