The Malý Stolec natural monument in the cadastral area of Stráž nad Ohří protects a geological formation consisting of a preserved, unquarried basalt cap and partially quarried basalt columns, a boulder field, dry grasslands, and characteristic thermophilous flora and fauna.
Nature
In the area around Stráž nad Ohří, the Nebesa National Nature Reserve protects natural forests, an isolated population of Aesculapian snakes, and Tertiary volcanic veins with columnar jointing. The Čedičová žíla Boč natural monument is also located in the area, featuring an exposed basalt vein with pronounced columnar jointing and fan-shaped, predominantly hexagonal basalt columns. This natural monument can be reached on foot from Stráž nad Ohří.
Culture and history
The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Stráž nad Ohří was built in 1768 from pilgrims’ alms. Above the valley of the Pekelský potok, Himlštejn Castle was probably built before 1434 to defend the associated estate.
The area around Stráž nad Ohří is also home to Horní Hrad (“Hauenštejn”), a castle and chateau dating from the 13th century. A circular trail just under two kilometres long with eight stops runs along Horní Hrad. The educational trail at Horní Hrad is suitable for school trips and families with children. Horní Hrad can be reached from Stráž nad Ohří railway station via three possible routes.
Hiking trails and cycle route
Cycle route No. 6 runs from Kyselka via Vojkovice and Stráž nad Ohří along the Ohře Valley. Some forest sections of the Ohře cycle route beyond Stráž nad Ohří are unpaved and may be more difficult to ride after rain.
