Culture and History
Hradec Králové District combines historic architecture with distinctive exhibition venues. Hrádek u Nechanic was designed in the Tudor Gothic style and built between 1839 and 1857 as a representative summer residence for the Harrach family. The exhibition in the château presents the life of the nobility in the second half of the 19th century, with original historic furnishings.
The château is set in a park established in 1844, covering approximately 18 hectares. It features extensive meadows, mature groups of trees and wooded areas. A circular path through the park offers views of the château, which stands on a gentle rise.
In Hradec Králové, the building of the Museum of East Bohemia has held the status of a national cultural monument since 1995. Another outstanding cultural site is the Třebechovice Probošt Nativity Scene: the nativity scene contains more than 2,000 carved wooden parts and is the only nativity scene in the Czech Republic to have been declared a national cultural monument.
The Všestary Archaeopark also reaches far back into the past. It is the sixth stop on an archaeological cycling route and includes an open-air museum with reconstructions of buildings from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Another exhibition focuses on the production and use of polished stone axes in the later Stone Age. The site also includes a cave with paintings.
