Nature

Vitosha Nature Park is considered the oldest nature park on the Balkan Peninsula. Marked Vitosha routes include trails from Dragalevtsi to Aleko Hut and Cherni Vrah, from Simeonovo to Aleko Hut, from Zheleznitsa to Kupena Hut and Cherni Vrah, from Bistritsa to Aleko Hut, from Knyazhevo to Zlatnite Mostove, and from Vladaya to Zlatnite Mostove. Boyana Waterfall is an 18-metre-high waterfall on the Boyana River and is located about 4 km southwest of Boyana. When the water flow is higher, it is clearly visible from Sofia. A path in Vitosha Park leads from Boyana through beech forest and past large rock formations to the eastern end of Boyana Lake; the walk takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Boyana Lake is an artificial body of water created in 1906 during the construction of Sofia’s Vitosha water supply system. It is located in a wooded environment with conifers, birches and aspens. The lake is associated with European toads, large water frogs and crested newts, which are considered species of European conservation importance. The surrounding area of Stolichna Obshtina also includes Sui vrah, Momina skala, Kopitoto and Diretsite.

Culture and history

Boyana Church consists of three structures dating from the 10th century, the early 13th century and the early 19th century. Its frescoes from 1259 form one of the most significant collections of medieval paintings.

Sofia’s Roman cultural heritage reserve contains the Cardo Maximus and Decumanus Maximus, foundations, mosaics, the original paving, water infrastructure, the western gate, part of an amphitheatre, the Triangle Tower and the eastern necropolis. Vrana Palace was built in 1909–1912 as a royal estate and combines Bulgarian National Revival architecture, Art Nouveau and French Classicism.

The nearby area of Stolichna Obshtina is home to the Earth and Man National Museum, Buyuk Dzhamya, the National Art Gallery and the National Museum of History.
