Culture and History
Tsari Mali Grad near Belchin combines a medieval church, an ethnographic complex, and an ancient fortress whose construction began during the reign of Emperor Valens. The site is accessible by vehicle and features a landscape train, barrier-free access, guided tours in Bulgarian and English, and an audio guide. The train may be closed in severe weather.
The Bayrakli Mosque in Samokov is located nearby and is open as a museum. The restored cultural monument contains a photo exhibition on the urban development of the town.
The Samokov Convent is an authentic architectural complex dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and was founded in 1772. Historically, the community was devoted to spinning and weaving and operated a girls' school. The Metropolitan Church of Samokov was built in 1712; it contains an expanded carved iconostasis and icons by leading representatives of the Samokov School of Art.
Belyova Church is considered the oldest Christian church in the town and stands on the foundations of a late-antique basilica dating from the 4th to the 6th century.
