Winter and mountains
Vitosha is only 8 kilometres from the centre of Sofia and reaches a summit of over 2,000 metres at Cherni Vrah. The mountain offers family outings, picnics, outdoor games for children, climbing, paragliding and mountain biking during the warmer seasons.
The route from the Aleko Hut to Cherni Vrah is described as a two-hour ascent. In addition, the European long-distance route E-4 crosses Vitosha on its connection between the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Peloponnese.
Nature
Vitosha is considered the oldest nature park on the Balkan Peninsula and is home to more than 1,400 plant species. The mountain also features a moraine stone river about 2 kilometres long and 300 metres wide.
Duhlata Cave is considered to be 13.2 kilometres long and a habitat for more than 20 cave animal species.
Culture
Sofia's central cultural heritage circuit connects the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St Sofia Church, the ancient remains of Serdika, the Largo, the Sofia History Museum, St Nedelya Church, Vitosha Boulevard, the National Palace of Culture, Lovers' Bridge, the National Museum Earth and Man and South Park.
The West Gate of Serdika archaeological park is an open-air archaeology park with free admission. The National Gallery is Bulgaria's largest art museum and houses more than 41,000 works of painting, sculpture, graphic art, decorative art and contemporary art.
Sofia Municipality operates open-air galleries at Lovers' Bridge near the National Palace of Culture, in the City Garden, in Crystal Garden and in the park in front of the National Palace of Culture. Boyana Church preserves frescoes painted in 1259, which are considered one of the significant collections of medieval painting. The Palace branch of the National Gallery presents temporary Bulgarian and foreign art exhibitions in the former Royal Palace.
The central route through Sofia is approximately 5 kilometres long. It is described as a 180-minute walk; 5 to 6 hours are indicated for visiting the sights mentioned. Bus routes 64 and 107 are listed for access to Boyana Church.
