Culture at the Haus der Kultur

The Haus der Kultur in Sankt Georgen im Attergau hosts several permanent and special exhibitions by the Attergau local history society, each with a different focus. These include an exhibition about the Roman estate at Königswiesen near Sankt Georgen. It features a model of the estate and restored finds from two archaeological excavations there, which took place in 2020 and 2021. The finds have been on display since 2025.

Another exhibition tells the story of the life of poet and composer Johann Beer (1655–1700) and the fact that he was born in Sankt Georgen im Attergau. Archaeology and biography offer different perspectives: the estate exhibition focuses on the model and finds, while the exhibition on Beer focuses on the life of a single poet and composer.

Collections and religious art

The parish museum displays guild tools and banners, as well as old parish indulgence letters and books. It also features liturgical vestments and objects. Items related to popular piety include pilgrimage souvenirs, various types of rosaries and crosses, and waxworks, including wax Christ Child figures made using the convent embroidery technique. The collection can be explored by theme: guilds and tools, religious practice, and different expressions of popular piety.

The pulpit of the parish church of St. George offers a different perspective: it dates from 1713 and was made by Meinrad Guggenbichler. While the parish museum displays a variety of objects, the pulpit is a single, dated work.

Walking, climbing and the lime tree

The Kelten.Baum.Weg trail in the Attergau is 2.5 kilometres long and has information boards and activity stations. It offers opportunities for playful learning, trying things out and being amazed; running around or relaxing are also among the options mentioned. In addition to its length, the stations give the trail its own distinctive character. When planning, you can therefore consider both the distance and your interest in the stations.

In Sankt Georgen im Attergau, the climbing hall at the Attergauer Freizeitzentrum “Freizi” offers climbing, bouldering and climbing courses. These are different activities within the sport of climbing. Check the hall’s operating details before your trip.

Weekly market and transport

The Attergau weekly market takes place every Friday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Nikolaus Harnoncourt Platz, in front of the municipal offices in Sankt Georgen im Attergau. Products on offer include regional cheese, bread, honey, bacon and sausage specialties, as well as regional and seasonal vegetables and fresh flowers. The individual vendors may vary. If the market is important to your stay, plan to visit on a Friday and check the dates before travelling.

St. Georgen im Attergau railway station is on the Vöcklamarkt–Attersee railway line, a completed section of the planned Voralpenbahn railway. Check the current timetable when planning your specific train journey.

Different factors therefore matter when planning: the market is tied to a day of the week and a specific time, the Kelten.Baum.Weg to a stated trail length, and the climbing hall to its three described activities.
