Nature and Hiking Destinations

Egelsee is a moor lake about 105 metres long and 65 metres wide, and a relic of the Ice Age. In 1965, around 4.1 hectares of Egelsee and Egelseemoor were designated a nature reserve by ordinance. These measurements refer to different things: the figures in metres describe the lake, while the figure in hectares describes the designated area.

An easy hike leads directly from Unterach to Egelsee. It passes forests, animal enclosures and meadows, and offers numerous viewpoints. Another hiking destination is Hochplettspitz: the trail there runs over forest paths and forestry roads to a viewing platform overlooking Lake Attersee and many of the region’s mountains.

Unterach is one of the municipalities in the Bauernland – Irrsee Mondsee Attersee Nature Park. The sweet chestnut forest in Unterach Am Attersee is another distinctive feature: nowhere else north of the Alps do sweet chestnuts ripen fully. Alongside the moor lake and hiking trails, the nature park and sweet chestnut forest thus represent different aspects of the landscape.

Culture, Monuments and Local Trails

The monument register issued on 23 June 2026 lists the Catholic parish church of St Bartholomew and the former cemetery area in Unterach Am Attersee as protected monuments by ordinance. The Viktor Kaplan Mausoleum is protected as a monument by a decision pursuant to Section 3. Thus, both the parish church with the former cemetery area and the mausoleum are identified as specific places for exploring the local culture.

The Unterach Am Attersee Time Travel Trail is an easy, 1.9-kilometre themed circular route that takes about an hour. It runs from the Unterach Am Attersee boat landing to Gustav Klimt Square in Unterach Am Attersee. If you want to set aside a manageable amount of time for a walk, its length and approximate duration provide a useful guide.

The Unterach cultural walk can be booked at any time on request for groups, associations, companies and tour groups. It is therefore a different way to plan than the Time Travel Trail: here, making an advance request for a group is the focus. An edition of the annual Chestnut Festival, featuring numerous local specialities, is listed for 2026.

Cycling, Climbing and Activities on the Water

The R2 Salzkammergut cycle route, around 34 kilometres long, runs from Seewalchen to Unterach. After the ride, it is possible to return to Attersee by boat. If you are planning this combination, check the current boat timetables separately; the stated route length is approximate.

The climbing tower in Unterach’s recreational area has around 40 routes with difficulty ratings from 3+ to 10. At Unterach lido, the facilities include a water-ski school and boat rental. The options are quite distinct: the cycle route connects two named places, the climbing tower offers a range of climbing routes, and the lido adds water skiing and boat rental.
