The historic town has a medieval main square, three well-preserved town gates, defensive towers and a town wall. This gives the town a clearly recognisable focus for days when exploring regional history is on the itinerary.

Historic town centre with medieval traces

Around the main square, the ground floors of all the buildings date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The town wall of Oberwölz is approximately 1.2 kilometres long and completely intact. This creates a historically characterised townscape for finding your way around, in which different buildings and traces of the town’s development belong together, without requiring you to limit your visit to a single building.

The former administrative building offers a particularly distinctive historical perspective. It was built in 1335 and is considered the oldest individual building in the town. Oberwölz’s former importance as the starting or finishing point of the Alpine crossing over the Glattjoch also forms part of this historical context: for centuries, this crossing was an important trade route within Styria and between Bavaria and Italy.

Museums for different interests

The Austrian Brass Music Museum Oberwölz combines education with interactive elements. A museum rally with interactive action corners invites visitors to test their knowledge in a playful way and try out instruments themselves. In addition, an audio slide show provides insights ranging from classical Harmoniemusik to contemporary brass music. Those interested in music history can therefore explore the same museum in a variety of ways.

Every year, the Documentation Centre of the Austrian Brass Music Association presents several current topics in cooperation with the Oberwölz municipal authority and the Austrian Brass Music Museum. The Oberwölz Local History Museum occupies around 250 m² in the medieval Schöttltor complex of the Kulturhaus. Its exhibits cover the history of the former possessions of the Prince-Bishopric of Freising and Rothenfels Castle. North of the town wall, the Oberwölz Fire Brigade Museum is also located in the area of the Austrian Brass Music Museum Oberwölz and the Oberwölz Local History Museum.

Guided tours and routes as additions

Three different historical town tours are offered in Oberwölz: “Speiksitzen and Everyday Life in the Middle Ages”, the children’s town tour “The Tooth in the Town Gate and Wealthy People”, and the “Evening Stroll within Medieval Walls”. The different titles help you choose according to your interests and the time of day. For families, the option explicitly designated as a children’s town tour is an especially obvious choice when history is to be explored together with a younger audience.

Longer routes are also part of the regional experience. The Hemma Pilgrimage Route from Admont Abbey to Gurk, opened in 2007, crosses the Glattjoch and follows a long day stage between Donnersbachwald and the town of Oberwölz. In the immediate vicinity of the destination, the “Legendary Wölz Valley” circular trail begins north of the town of Oberwölz at the night watchman. These options represent different forms of activity: a long pilgrimage stage and a circular route in the surrounding area.

Practical information for your stay

For visits to the historic centre and museums, Oberwölz has sufficient parking available directly outside and within the town. This can make planning your day easier if you want to combine several cultural attractions. At the same time, you should arrange the order of your visits according to your own interests: the main square, town wall and historic buildings offer different focal points from the museums or a guided tour.

When looking for accommodation in Oberwölz Stadt, you can therefore first decide what kind of stay you are planning. If urban history and museums are the main focus, the cultural attractions mentioned above are the most important points of reference for planning your day. If you also want to include a guided tour or a route, you should set aside a separate block of time and check the specific arrangements in advance. If you would also like to compare other destinations, you can include Schöder, Krakauschatten, Schönberg-Lachtal, Sankt Blasen, Zeutschach, Krakauhintermühlen, Frojach-Katsch and Teufenbach in your research.
