Discover Hasenbach
Accommodation in Hasenbach
The Högmoos–Hasenbach trail, the Salzach stretch, and a bike tour starting in Taxenbach represent different aspects of planning a trip. On foot, the focus is on the uphill route via Kleinsonnberg; by bike, Hasenbach is a waypoint on a tour towards Pension Wiesfleck. The geological features of the Salzach provide a distinct connection to the landscape.
On foot via Kleinsonnberg
The Högmoos–Hasenbach trail leads from Högmoos uphill along an old lane to Kleinsonnberg. There, it branches off towards Hasenbach. The climb and the junction are key features of the route described: the trail first climbs uphill to Kleinsonnberg and continues from there towards Hasenbach. The trail is also designated as the preceding section of stage ET12 of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail. This stage reference places the local trail section within the regional hiking network; the specific connection remains Högmoos–Hasenbach.
The Salzach, rock faces and gorge
From Hasenbach, the Salzach cuts into solid rock for the first time. On the stretch from Hasenbach to the mouth of the Rauriser Ache, the river is partly gorge-like. On both sides, glacially unpolished rock faces rise up to 40 metres high, and the Salzach forms rapids. The description thus connects rock formations and currents with a clearly identified stretch of river. Another point of interest along the water is the Wolfbach: it flows into the Salzach at the level of the village of Hasenbach, within the municipality of Taxenbach. This identifies two distinct features—the rocky gorge beginning at Hasenbach and the Wolfbach’s confluence at the level of the village. The gorge-like stretch, in turn, extends to the mouth of the Rauriser Ache.
In the Taxenbach Gorge (Kitzlochklamm), walkways and tunnels dating from the 16th century open up the gorge to hikers and walkers, leading to an idyllic hermitage. Here, historic structures shape the route through the gorge. If you are planning a visit, check the latest visitor information in advance so you can plan according to the conditions at the time of your visit.
Bike route and timetable
The cross-border Tauern Cycle Path runs directly through Taxenbach. The bike tour to Pension Wiesfleck starts in the centre of Taxenbach and follows the Tauern Cycle Path upstream along the Salzach towards Gries. On this tour, Hasenbach is a waypoint 2.5 kilometres after the start. This distance therefore indicates the waypoint’s position on the route. As route details may change when the route is revised, it is worth checking the current route if the exact waypoint matters for your plans.
In the 2026 timetable for route 640, the Taxenbach Hasenbach stop is listed between Taxenbach Högmoos and Taxenbach-Rauris Bahnhof. The timetable includes validity periods starting on 14 December 2025. For your journey, check the period that matches your travel date and the timetable that applies to it.
