Reith: Trails, Water and Local History
Accommodation in Reith
A walking and cycling path runs along the Saalach to the Reither Saalach Bridge; this is separate from the short circular walk to Innersbachklamm. If you are looking for accommodation in Reith, you can make your choice based on the activities you have planned: the gorge walk, the Saalach trail, a bathing spot or historic sites. The trail starting points and the changing conditions on the river are important things to bear in mind when visiting.
Walks along the Saalach and to Innersbachklamm
A short circular walk to Innersbachklamm starts at the car park by the Reither Saalach Bridge. The short gorge runs between rocks, steps and a stream. The circular route and the scenery in the gorge give the walk its character, without requiring a visit to another destination.
A walking and cycling path runs along the Saalach to the Reither Saalach Bridge. This gives you a choice of different routes: a short circular walk towards the gorge and a riverside path leading to the bridge. If you want to plan your day around a specific starting point, the car park by the Reither Saalach Bridge is the stated starting point for the gorge walk.
Bathing spot at Gaissteig and water conditions
The bathing spot at Gaissteig is a shallow, stony area on the banks of the Saalach, where the current is moderate. From the district of Reith, a walking path of about one kilometre leads towards Unken to the bathing spot. Allow for this walk when planning your visit. River conditions can change depending on the water level, even though the current is described as moderate.
The rock pool at the entrance to Innersbachklamm is a separate spot: after prolonged rain or thunderstorms, it can have a strong current. Be aware of the possible current there after such weather. The area at the entrance to Reith is listed as the car park for Gaissteig. As parking availability can change, check the current parking situation before your visit.
Landscape and local history
The landscape is shaped by a gentle mountain pass. For a long time, an eagle’s nest was located below one of the Drei Brüder. The small village of Reith also lends its name to the Reiter Alm mountain range.
The Reith Church was built in 1670 and dedicated to Saint Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor. The Brechler Chapel stands across the Saalach near the Reither Bridge and not far from a bus stop; it is only a short walk from there in the direction of Lofer. It is considered very likely to be at least 300 years old.
On the way to the “Zu den Drei Brüdern” inn, you pass an old Brechel or Badstub’n. The Innersbach also has a historical connection: in the 16th century, it served as a small feeder stream for floating timber from the Reither mountains to the Reichenhall saltworks. Timber rafting refers to transporting wood on water; the stream served as a feeder route on the way to the saltworks. In Unken, heated Brechelstuben were generally used as sweat baths until the 18th century, and in some cases even longer.
