Gaaden can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the local history museum, the centuries-old Via Sacra, architectural and literary history, and connections to the landscape and mountain biking. If you are looking for accommodation in Gaaden, these themes can help structure your trip planning: first consider whether local history, pilgrimage traditions or particular routes are especially important to you.

Local History Museum and Pilgrimage Traditions

The Gaaden Local History Museum documents the history of Gaaden from Celtic and Roman times onwards. The collection also includes embroidery and handicrafts dating from around 1885, as well as exhibits from the imperial era. One of these is a milk glass belonging to Empress Elisabeth. The historical perspective thus ranges from early periods to specific objects from a much later time.

The Via Sacra is a centuries-old pilgrimage route that passes through Gaaden. On the local section, the route leads west from St James’s Church to Gaaden Calvary and then continues towards Heiligenkreuz. The church, dedicated to St James the Greater, was a popular stop for pilgrims. The route and the church therefore offer different ways to understand the town’s pilgrimage traditions.

The promotion of the Via Sacra also extends beyond Gaaden: the municipalities of Gaaden, Heiligenkreuz, Alland, Altenmarkt and Kaumberg are working together to introduce the section from Gaaden to Kaumberg to the public. This combines a specific description of the route in Gaaden with a shared focus on a longer section.

Architecture, Art and Literature

The Mount Tabor Calvary group, created by Giovanni Giuliani in 1699, stands west of Gaaden. Another historical landmark is the former Obergaaden hunting lodge, which was used and remodelled as a rectory from 1749 onwards. A complete series of hunting frescoes in the “alla grotesca” style, dating from 1690 to 1700, was uncovered in the Maria Theresa Room. The frescoes therefore predate the building’s later use as a rectory; these are two distinct historical periods.

Gaaden also has a specific connection to literary history: in 1833, the poet Ferdinand Raimund completed “The Spendthrift” at the Raimund House. Along with the architectural and artistic heritage, this offers a distinct perspective on local history that goes beyond the periods represented in the local history museum.

The Gaadner Schmarrn is a historical part of the town’s hospitality tradition. It used to be served to many guests from Vienna passing through Gaaden on their way elsewhere. This account forms part of the town’s history and describes how travellers were once welcomed.

Landscape and Routes

The Mödlingbach stream flows through Gaaden’s wide valley basin. The Anninger Tieftal core zone lies entirely within the municipality. In core zones designated as nature reserves, visitors may only walk on marked paths. If you are travelling through the area, this restriction is essential to consider when planning your route.

When mountain biking, the direction of travel matters. The Gaaden Uphill Trail is in the Anninger Mountain Bike Area and climbs from Gaaden to the Anninger Schutzhaus. Because of the high number of hikers, runners, children and dogs, it is primarily for uphill use. Sections approved for downhill riding are marked with yellow supplementary signs and serve only as connections between the neighbouring single tracks.

The Buchtal Trail has a different direction rule: it descends from the Anninger Schutzhaus to Gaaden and may only be ridden downhill. When comparing the routes described here, their direction and endpoints are therefore key. When planning, follow the applicable signs and observe the different rules for the two trails.
