Urban history and culture in Wolfsberg

Parts of Wolfsberg’s medieval city wall have been preserved on Schlossberg and at Rossmarkt. The late Romanesque parish church of St. Markus offers an elevated view of the city: its tower has an observation gallery 33 metres above the city.

Wolfsberg Castle also combines a historic setting with contemporary art. During the summer months, contemporary artists exhibit their works there. At the Museum im Lavanthaus, multimedia and interactive stations present regional topics, including a Lavant Valley dialect quiz and a digital flower book. The museum comprises around 15 thematic areas and thus offers various approaches to the history, everyday life and special features of the Lavant Valley.

In Bad St. Leonhard, the Leonhardikirche is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Carinthia.

Excursions for families and different interests

At Klippitztörl, the summer toboggan run is 1,400 metres long and covers a difference in altitude of 260 metres. Located directly there, the adventure climbing garden includes suspension bridges, a via ferrata, rock and tree elements, as well as zip lines. The two activities differ significantly: the summer toboggan run offers a long descent with a pronounced difference in altitude, while the climbing garden combines several climbing and balancing elements.

On the Koralpe, the circular hiking trail with panoramic views is considered a family-friendly route and is suitable for easy to moderately difficult hikes. For you, this path can therefore offer a different form of shared landscape experience from the action-oriented activities at Klippitztörl. In St. Gertraud, the educational water trail starts at the “St. Gertraud Umkehrschleife” bus stop. It takes one hour, is 3.2 kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty level.

The educational bee trail near St. Andrä is 5.5 kilometres long and has eight information boards. It includes an observation hive near the former Müllerwirt inn in Mühldorf. Together with the hiking trails on the Koralpe and the educational water trail, it offers specific themes for walks and tours. The difficulty levels of the circular trail on the Koralpe and the educational water trail help with initial planning.

Natural monuments and landscape features

The Pomsbach stream rises in the Großen Kar, plunges 15 metres into the depths in several cascades and forms the Poms Waterfall natural monument. Zoderkogel is located in the immediate vicinity of the Wolfsberg political district. The Hebalm also includes the natural lake Hebalmsee. These three landscape features represent different forms of nature: a cascading waterfall, a mountain in the immediate vicinity of the district and a lake on the Hebalm.

Cider, wine and regional topics

The wine brand vinumpaulinum belongs to St. Paul’s Benedictine Abbey. The wines of the St. Paul Abbey estate come from Archduke Johann’s vineyards near Marburg and from favoured locations in the Lavant Valley. The Zogglhof is home to the Mostbarkeiten Gallery and the Fruit Tree Museum under one roof. The international cider fair “Mostbarkeiten-Kostbarkeiten” also takes place there in May. This makes it possible to experience culture and regional products in several different locations, without limiting the topics to a single museum.

Getting to the Lavant Valley

Since 12 December 2025, the Koralmbahn railway has travelled to the Lavant Valley in around 36 minutes from Graz and around 3 hours and 5 minutes from Vienna. By car, the Lavant Valley can be reached via the A 2 Südautobahn motorway, with the Bad St. Leonhard, Wolfsberg Nord, Wolfsberg Süd and St. Andrä exits. The connection that suits you best therefore depends primarily on the chosen starting point and means of transport.
