Types of Pistes and Difficulty Levels at Ski Areas

A groomed piste, a marked ski route and terrain away from marked runs each present different challenges. Before setting off, check what type of route lies ahead and whether it suits your ability and the current conditions.

Groomed pistes

Groomed pistes are marked on the mountain and prepared by the ski area for regular skiing. Their grading—often blue, red or black—indicates the expected level of difficulty. However, colours and criteria are not the same in every country. So check the piste map for the specific area and pay attention to signs at the trail entrance.

Ski routes and connections

A ski route is shown as a separate route on the piste map, but it is not necessarily groomed like a piste. Snow conditions, uneven terrain and visibility can vary more there. Connections between pistes may be narrow, steep or busy. Before setting off, check where the route leads and whether it is open.

Away from marked runs

Terrain outside open pistes and ski routes is not the same as a groomed run. Navigation, snow cover and hazards can be difficult to assess there. Anyone skiing away from marked runs needs appropriate knowledge and must take local safety and avalanche information into account. Closures and warnings must be followed.

Difficulty also depends on the day

The grading does not describe every situation. Hard snow, fresh snow, moguls, wind, shade and poor visibility can make a route considerably more challenging. Choose an alternative if you can no longer control your braking, turns or visibility safely. The guidance on piste markings and safety and piste rules complements the piste map.

For behaviour on open pistes, the FIS Rules for Conduct for Skiers and Snowboarders set out basic rules. They do not replace local information about whether a route is open or about hazards.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ski route a groomed piste?

Not necessarily. Check the legend on the local piste map and the signs at the trail entrance.

Can a blue piste become difficult?

Yes. Weather, visibility, snow and crowds affect the run regardless of its basic marking.

What should I do about closed routes?

Stay outside the closed area and choose an open route that suits your ability.
