Beginners on a Ski Holiday

Even if you’ve never been on a ski holiday before, you should definitely give it a try. It doesn’t matter if you “can’t ski at all.” With good instruction, beginners can tackle intermediate runs after a week. Basically, there are no special prerequisites for learning to ski.

Gentle slopes to get started

Of course, it’s ideal to arrive for your ski holiday in a good mood. And you’ll need suitable ski clothing—it should be warm and waterproof. A gentle slope is a good place to start, on what’s known as the “bunny hill.” Ski instructors offer group or private lessons. Beginners are taught everything from the slope rules to skiing technique. Warming up is an essential part of skiing, of course. Failing to do so can lead to serious injuries.

“Bunny hill”

On the bunny hill, you take your first turns to get a feel for the skis and the snow. You practice falling and getting back up again, over and over. You also practice braking, turning, various steps, and, of course, riding the lift. In fact, using the ski lift is the most difficult part for some beginners. Getting on and off isn’t easy at first.

Wellness and après-ski

But there’s plenty of fun to be had, too. Exercises are presented as games, and students test their solutions through play. This makes learning much easier and faster than simply following instructions. If you do end up with severe muscle soreness, it’s time for a day of relaxation in the wellness area. Après-ski is also tempting after a long day on the slopes. And ski resorts all rent out equipment at fairly affordable prices.

Once you’ve been on a ski holiday and tried skiing, you won’t be able to give it up anytime soon. It’s worth giving it a try!
