Nature and Activities
At the southern end of Walchwil lies Walchwil lido. There are opportunities for swimming and a sunbathing lawn for relaxing. At Ausseregg, the playground offers views of Lake Zug; the Vita Parcours near Ausseregg provides a fitness trail.
The Zug–Walchwil hiking route leads through deciduous and fir forests and offers views of Rigi and Pilatus. It takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Flowering cherry trees are part of this hike. A special microclimate along the lakeshore supports southern and exotic plants; the route also offers the opportunity to cool off in the lake.
Culture and History
Walchwil’s Catholic parish church stands in the village centre. Vorderbergstrasse was built in 1876, rises from the lakeshore towards Oberdorf, and passes the parish church and the Antonius Chapel. The present church replaced a church built between 1663 and 1666 in 1838. Walchwil’s Reformed church is located at a prominent viewpoint.
Walchwil’s traditional local economy included fishing as well as fruit growing and winegrowing.
Getting Around and Development
Walchwil’s local bus operates a circular route from Walchwil railway station through Aesch and Oberdorf. Walchwil’s development benefited from steamship services on Lake Zug from 1852 and from the opening of the Gotthard Railway on 30 May 1897.
