Château-d'Oex is located at an altitude of approximately 958 meters above sea level in the Vaud Alps. The town's tourism history dates back to the late 19th century. The opening of the Montreux–Bernese Oberland Railway in 1904 is said to have contributed to Château-d'Oex becoming a tourism center.

Culture and Townscape
The Church of Saint-Donat, dating from the 14th century, stands on a hill south of the village. The old town center at the foot of the church hill contains characteristic 19th-century houses.
Event
The International Hot Air Balloon Week has been held annually in January since 1979.
