History and Culture
Niederwald appears in historical records from around 1300 onwards as an independent municipality. The historical development of the settlement is connected with the old Rhône bridge, locally known as “Rottebrigge”, as well as with an old mule track that crossed from Ernen to the right bank of the Rhône.
Niederwald is home to a still-inhabited house dating from the 16th century. The visitor centre at Niederwald railway station is dedicated to César Ritz.
Getting There
Niederwald railway station can be reached by train from Andermatt or Visp. The village is accessible via Federal Route 19 from Andermatt or Brig.
