Culture

Mezzovico has three churches: San Mamete, the parish church of S. Abbondio, and the Oratory of Loreto. The parish church of S. Abbondio is classified as a monument of regional importance. The Mezzovico area also contains numerous votive chapels, which are regarded as historical evidence of local religious faith.

San Mamete is a 12th-century church; it was enlarged in the 15th century and reoriented toward the south. Its nave was probably expanded during the Romanesque period by adding a second nave to the south. Frescoes depicting Saints Mamete and Anthony the Great, dating from 1470–1480, can be found at the cemetery gate. A large 1534 fresco of the Crucifixion has been preserved in the choir; it is associated with the type introduced by Bernardino Luini. The second chapel contains stucco work from 1614 framing scenes from the lives of Saints Roch and Sebastian. The walls and choir are decorated with frescoes from the Luino school depicting the Crucifixion, the Last Judgment, the Church Fathers, and the Evangelists. San Mamete is surrounded by a park of the same name and is recognized by the federal authorities as an architectural cultural heritage site.

The Oratorio di Sant’Ambrogio al Castello stands on a wooded rocky outcrop within Mezzovico-Vira. Built between the 9th and 10th centuries, the building is a national historic monument. The local cultural heritage landscape of Mezzovico-Vira includes the Church of San Mamete and the Oratorio Sant’Ambrogio.

Piaza du Buteghin is one of the municipality’s public squares used throughout the year for moments of relaxation.

Nature

The restored chestnut-wood compartments were historically important for local self-sufficiency. The municipality also carried out restoration work on chestnut groves above Mezzovico and near S. Ambrogio. In 2020, this work was nearing completion; final completion was scheduled for 2021.
