Nature

The Sulla Via degli alpeggi N3 runs from Monte Lema via Alpe di Mageno to Breno. A hiking route connects Miglieglia and Breno: it descends through the forest to the Magliasina and then climbs again towards Breno. The Sentiero del Castagno passes through the five villages of Alto Malcantone and leads through chestnut groves, birch forests, along streams, and across meadows. The trail is approximately 15 km long and has seven educational stations covering chestnut cultivation and the use of chestnut wood and chestnut products. A themed forest trail in Breno is dedicated to the chestnut heritage. Another hiking route near Breno leads through paved stone lanes, past the Fontana dell'Asino, and through chestnut groves.

Culture

The parish church of San Lorenzo in Breno has been documented since 1233. It was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century and later extended in 1852. Two chapels in San Lorenzo are decorated with 17th-century stucco work by Pietro Sartori from Vezio. Breno's most important institution in the 19th century was a drawing school founded in 1883. A small chapel near Tortoglio commemorates the reconciliation between Breno and Miglieglia in 1907.

Traditions

In Ticino, chestnuts have nourished families for centuries. To this day, they remain associated with local products and chestnut groves where visitors can go for walks. In Alto Malcantone, a metato, also known as a grà, between Mugena and Vezio demonstrates the traditional drying and preservation of chestnuts. Alpe di Mageno belongs to the Patriziato di Breno and produces cheese on site.
