Obersaxen is a scattered settlement in the municipality of Obersaxen Mundaun in the canton of Graubünden. It lies on the right side of the young Rhine on the northern slope of Piz Mundaun in the Surselva region.

Geographical setting

The inhabited terrace lies at an altitude of approximately 1,000 to 1,430 metres and extends for around 14 kilometres. The highest mountain is the Schwarzhorn, at 2,890 metres.

Culture

Obersaxen is home to Walser German culture within an otherwise Romansh-speaking area. The scattered settlement pattern is considered typical of a Walser settlement. Historical chapels and village culture are among the special features of the Obersaxen Mundaun visitor area.

The ruins of Moregg, Schwarzenstein, Saxenstein and Heidenberg castles are located in the Obersaxen area. Paspels Castle and Rietberg Castle are located in the wider regional surroundings of Obersaxen.

Nature

La Cauma, Crap Muot, Hireli and Pastget Lenn are located in the surrounding area of Obersaxen.

Paths and leisure

The Obersaxen Mundaun visitor area has numerous paths for leisurely and more challenging tours, offering extensive views. Red benches are considered vantage points and photo spots with scenic views. The Rufalipark is associated with a bathing lake and recreation there.
