Degen is first mentioned in the Reichsguturbar, which is dated to around the year 840. The parish church of Nossadunna in Degen dates back to the Carolingian land register. Nossadunna is the parish church of the Fraissen parish; Sogn Vetger is its branch church. The Nossadunna church stands on an ancient cult site with an almost dried-up spring and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The chapel of Sogn Bistgaun contains an altar by the artist Ivo Strigel from 1506, which was redesigned as a Baroque altar around 1740. The route Places of Magic – Vattiz/Degen leads to the small Sogn Vetger chapel on a hill on the edge of Degen. The chapel stands on a glacial moraine ridge.
The Openair Lumnezia has taken place in Degen since 2006 and attracts around 18,000 visitors to Lumnezia over one summer weekend.
Culture
The Lumnezia cultural trail runs via Vella, Davos Munts, Vignogn, Degen and Pleif back to Vella. The easy route is 7.5 kilometres long. Information boards cover history, culture, geology, fauna and flora; three additional information boards explain the plant and animal life of the fens. More than 30 boundary stones commemorate important events in the valley’s history.
Winter
The Degen cross-country ski trail is a 4-kilometre route with Degen as its starting and finishing point. It is groomed for classic cross-country skiing and skating and is suitable for both beginners and experienced cross-country skiers. Longer flat sections alternate with small descents and climbs along the route.
The Degen night trail is an approximately 1-kilometre route groomed for classic cross-country skiing and skating. From mid-December to the beginning of March, it is lit on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The access point is at the upper edge of the village of Degen.
For the hike between Vattiz and Degen, take PostBus route 90.441 from Ilanz to Vrin as far as Vattiz. For the return journey, PostBus route 90.444 runs from Degen to Vella, after which you continue on route 90.441.
Landscape
Turatscha is a viewpoint reached via the southern edge of Degen. There, a grass-covered ruin marks the site of the former ancestral castle of the episcopal ministeriales of Blumenthal, who controlled and secured the routes. Crap dils Morts lies on the descent from Turatscha towards the Glenner.
Crap Malèe is a large limestone erratic boulder known as the Devil’s Stone, notable for its black colour and apple-like shape.
The Davos Munts bathing lake is located near Degen, above Vattiz in Val Lumnezia, at an altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level. The natural bathing lake offers a paddling pool, a jetty, several barbecue areas, a beach volleyball court and a slackline.
Local
The Caduff Erlebnis Farm includes a small farm restaurant and a shop offering mainly self-produced goods. The range is supplemented by products from selected other businesses. In summer, the Caduff Erlebnis Farm opens its show garden to interested visitors.
NUA serves a seven-course surprise menu inspired by what grows, ripens and gives off its fragrance on its own farm, as well as by the ideas of the kitchen team.
