Geographical Setting

Silvaplana is located on Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadine at an elevation of 1,815 metres. The lake is the middle one of the three Upper Engadine lakes and lies between Lake St. Moritz and Lake Sils.

The village is situated in the Upper Engadine lake landscape and is surrounded by peaks over 3,000 metres high. It is also located at the intersection of the Inn and the Julier Pass; the northern approach is considered accessible.

Crap Alv, Munt San Gian, Piz Surlej and Chastelets are located in the immediate surroundings of Silvaplana.

Culture and History

A glacial erratic boulder on the lakeshore near the village district of Surlej is associated with the tradition that Friedrich Nietzsche is said to have conceived the idea of eternal recurrence there in August 1881.
