Culture and history
Ftan's parish has been documented since 1492; around 1542, the village converted from Catholicism to the Reformed faith.
For the Middle Ages and the early modern period, Ftan's connections to the Lords of Tarasp and to the monasteries of Müstair, Scuol, and Marienberg have been documented. In 1652, Ftan became independent from Austria.
The Engadine valley road was built below Ftan between 1860 and 1862. The Rhaetian Railway station was opened in 1913 and is located far below the village.
