Nature and Landscape

The surrounding area of Glarus includes Vrenelisgärtli, Bächihorn, Heustock and Plattenberg. The municipality also includes the foothills of the Vorderglärnisch, which is approximately 2,300 metres high; it extends as far as the 2,914-metre-high Bächistock in the Glärnisch massif.

Culture and History

The neo-Romanesque town church is regarded as a symbol of Glarus. The Church of St. Adelrich is located in the wider regional surroundings of Glarus.

Glarus experienced early industrialisation. The fire of 1861 destroyed large parts of the settlement, leaving only a few buildings from before the fire in the townscape. Very few buildings in Glarus date from before 1861.

Glarus is first documented in the early 9th century; the first mention in German dates from 1178.

Municipality

Since 1 January 2011, the municipality of Glarus has also included Ennenda, Netstal and Riedern.
