Geographical Location

Gstaad is a village in the German-speaking part of the canton of Bern in south-western Switzerland and belongs to the municipality of Saanen.

Culture and History

The Chapel of St Nicholas in Gstaad was built in 1402; its murals date from the second half of the 15th century.

The centre of Gstaad developed at a junction of routes to Valais and Vaud. In the 13th and 14th centuries, there was an inn and a warehouse for trade goods there.

The Montreux–Lenk railway line in the Simmental reached the area in 1905.
