Sonvilier lies at an altitude of 802 metres above sea level in the upper part of the Jura longitudinal valley of Vallon de Saint-Imier. The village extends on both sides of the Schüss (Suze) between the Jura ranges of Montagne du Droit and Mont d’Amin. In a straight line, Sonvilier is approximately 12 kilometres northeast of La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Landscape
The municipality includes part of the Vallon de Saint-Imier basin drained by the Schüss. The highest point is Mont d’Amin at 1,269 metres, while Montagne du Droit reaches 1,220 metres. The 23.8 km² municipal area extends as far as the Mont d’Amin anticline to the south and the ridge of Montagne du Droit to the north.
Le Gros Crêt and Petit Crêt are located in the area surrounding Sonvilier. The wider regional area also includes Mont Vully, Tablettes and Château de Gorgier.
Culture
The ruins of Erguel Castle stand on a rocky promontory. The surviving round tower is considered the largest castle ruin in the Bernese Jura. From the 13th century onwards, the castle was the centre of a bailiwick of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel.
Erguel Castle lies above Sonvilier on a wooded, rocky ridge. The round keep has a maximum external diameter of 7.50 metres; its walls are up to 2.50 metres thick.
