Culture

The older town centre of Kungälv is a well-preserved wooden town structure and is of national heritage interest. Västra Gatan and Torget formed the connecting route through the town, which was established at the end of the 17th century. Gamla rådhuset stands on Stora Torget; it was built between 1762 and 1767 and originally also housed the customs house. Today, it is regarded as a symbol of old Kungälv. The church in the centre is a Baroque wooden church, whose construction began in 1679.

Among Kungälv’s culturally and historically valuable buildings is Uddmanska huset at Västra Gatan 9, which was built at the end of the 18th century. Hembygdsgården stands on Fästningsholmen; it is the town’s former vicarage and was moved here from Västra Gatan in the winter of 1930–31. The historic townscape is complemented by Mimers Konsthall, with changing exhibitions including watercolour, ceramics and children’s exhibitions. Mimers Teater hosts performances, concerts, theatre, dance and lectures. At Mimers Café, you can enjoy fika or eat light meals.

Bohus Fortress is a medieval castle associated with bloody sieges and power struggles. Guided tours are available, including a self-guided tour through the app included with the admission ticket. Bohus Fortress also offers archery and raft trips across the pond. In the area around Kungälv, Ragnhildsholmen is another historic site, featuring castle ruins by the Nordre älv. Stora Smällen at Västra Porten in Ytterby is an Iron Age burial ground with 160 archaeological remains.

Information boards stand on the hill along the continuous path to the Stora Smällen burial ground, by the southern and northern cattle grids. These cattle grids provide access to the sheep pasture and the burial ground.

Nature

The Fontin nature reserve can be reached directly on foot from central Kungälv. The area includes forest, pastureland and Lake Svarte Mosse. The area around Kungälv also includes Kastellegårdsskogen, a popular recreational area between Komarken and Ytterby.

Ragnhildsholmen is a well-known and frequently visited birdwatching area around Kungälv. Among other species, nightingales and rosefinches can be found there. Svartedalen is also nearby; it is one of the largest contiguous coniferous forest areas in western Sweden and is ideal for hiking. In Svartedalen, five hiking trails begin at Bottenstugan at the eastern end of Ålevattnet, with lengths ranging from 1.9 to 4 kilometres.

Hiking and Trails

The Bohusleden is a 370-kilometre hiking trail between Lindome and Strömstad. Two of its 27 stages pass through Kungälv Municipality. The Fontin–Grandalen section of the Bohusleden is 19 kilometres long. Thus, both a long-distance hiking trail of regional importance and shorter trails in the immediate area are among the documented landscape experiences around Kungälv.

Water

Kungälv Municipality has six seaside bathing areas and two bathing areas by lakes. There are also outdoor swimming pools and an indoor swimming facility.
