Umbrías in the Aravalle
Umbrías lies in the Aravalle on the shaded side of the eastern Gredos massif. The landscape around Umbrías includes meadows on the slopes of the Sierra. There are lush gardens in the floodplain near Umbrías. You can regard the terms Aravalle, Sierra and floodplain as different spatial references. For your own planning, you can note these references separately before putting together individual trails, bodies of water or local destinations.
Landscape and Bodies of Water
Near La Retuerta, the 5-km-long Embalse del Aravalle reservoir lies on the river, close to the bridge on the Ávila–Plasencia road. You can treat the different landscape forms as separate topics when planning your day. In this way, the hillside landscape, floodplain and body of water each represent their own geographical reference within the surrounding area.
Trails and Botanical Impressions
The trails complement this landscape perspective with clearly distinguishable formats. The Ruta Botánica de Casas del Abad is a short route on which botanical species are explained using texts and QR codes. A simple 3.2-km route connects Umbrías, Casas de Maripedro, La Retuerta and La Venta de Veguillas. The different route lengths help you compare the time required for a trail when planning your own day. The length of the route is not the only relevant factor in determining the time required: the botanical route conveys knowledge about species through texts and QR codes, while the 3.2-km route connects several places. The two formats can therefore be distinguished by duration, sequence of places and subject focus, without combining them into a single trail description.
Astronomy and Bathing Spot
The type of activity can also be planned in different ways. At the Observatorio Astronómico La Mirada, long-exposure photography is used during visits to explain various deep-sky objects. The facility offers both group visits and individual visits. When planning, you can consider the type of visit separately from the photographic approach used for explanations.
Another destination is the El Puente de la Canaleja bathing spot in the municipality of Umbrías. It is easily accessible; the car can be parked a few metres from the water. When choosing between astronomical observation and spending time by the water, you can put your preferred type of activity first. Whether observation or the water determines the rhythm of the day is left to your personal planning.
Culture and Cuisine
The built heritage includes the Iglesia de San Martín. It was built next to the road in 1965. A historical event associated with the area is La Batalla del Escobar, which originated in the municipality of Umbrías. If you are interested in culture, you can consider the architectural reference and the historical origin separately. For regional cuisine, there is the Casa La Fuente bar-restaurant in Umbrías. It offers traditional cuisine and a set menu. The building, event and cuisine can be noted as separate topics.
