Parkan: Thermal Baths, Danube Riverside and Culture in Štúrovo

Štúrovo combines thermal water, river landscapes and an unusually diverse cultural history. A thermal spring with a temperature of 39.3 °C rises on the northern outskirts of the city. The Vadaš open-air swimming complex was built around it on an area of 24 ha. Alongside the historical and natural aspects, this creates a clearly defined area focused on water-based activities and relaxation experiences.

Thermal Water and Leisure

The Vadaš Thermal Resort Štúrovo has eight outdoor and five indoor pools. The pools also include the Lagúna wave pool. The facilities are complemented by six water slides. The resort also includes a lake where boating and pedal boating are possible. The various water areas, the slides and the lake each form separate components of the resort, while the thermal spring marks the source of the 24 ha recreational complex.

Landscape

The Hron flows into the Danube near Štúrovo. The city is surrounded by the Kováčovské kopce hills; at 395 m, Burda is the highest peak in these hills. There is also a distinctive place to stop along the Danube: a viewing bench near the Mária-Valéria Bridge also serves as a photo frame.

Culture and History

The Štúrovo City Museum is a local museum focusing on ethnography and local history. It is located in a building belonging to the Franklovci family that was built in the 19th century. Three halls are available for the permanent exhibitions, supplemented by one hall for temporary exhibitions and an outdoor exhibition in the courtyard.

Since 1993, the Július Barta City Gallery has been open to the public. Exhibitions by local and foreign artists change there monthly. In the park in front of the town hall, the Rozprávajúca skala sculpture commemorates the first written mention of the city. Štúrovo also has a bronze equestrian statue of the Polish King Jan Sobieski, which was unveiled in October 2008.

One of the notable historical sites is the military cemetery with a memorial on Ul. sv. Štefana. It dates from 1947 and was declared a national cultural monument on 17 July 1963. At the same time, it is the only immovable national cultural monument in Štúrovo. The former synagogue at Hlavná 32 is one of the city's cultural and historical sights. Next to a church, there is also a Baroque Calvary group dating from 1766 with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. Štúrovo is also home to a protected monument built in the Baroque style in 1701.

The Mária-Valéria Bridge connects Štúrovo with Esztergom. The iron bridge was put into operation on 28 September 1895. After its reconstruction in 2001, it was ceremonially inaugurated on 11 October 2001.

Annual Cycle

The Šimon and Judas fair is the only one of the four fairs originally held in Štúrovo that has survived. It takes place every year at the beginning of October and continues to shape the October Cavalcade. This gives the events calendar a firm historical connection without repeating the former diversity of the four fairs.

Cycling Routes and Riverside

Three stages of different lengths have been documented for cyclists. The first stage of the Ostrihom–Štúrovo cycling route is 16.8 km long and begins in Štúrovo's pedestrian zone. The second stage, Štúrovo–Kamenný Most–Vŕšok–Nána–Štúrovo, covers 23.8 km and runs along the embankments of the Danube and Hron. The third stage runs via Štúrovo, Kamenica nad Hronom, Chľaba, Leľa and Bajtava back to Štúrovo, is 42.7 km long and suitable only for mountain bikes.

There are two bicycle service stands in Štúrovo for simple repairs. One of them is located near the Vadaš thermal baths. In addition, the Vizamarket webshop points to a regional supply option: it was launched in Štúrovo on 26 April 2023, offered fresh homemade products from the region and provided for weekly collection.
